The code field lives in the cart or on the payment page, and the discount is real only when the order summary shows it before you pay.
Find the field first. It is labelled promo code, discount code, or voucher code depending on the store, and it sits either in the cart beside the order summary or one step later on the payment page. If you cannot see it, look for a small text link such as 'Have a code?' that expands the field.
Enter the code exactly as issued. Match capital letters, avoid adding a space when pasting, and add no punctuation. Then press the Apply button beside the field — typing the code is not enough. The cart reprices only after Apply is clicked and the page refreshes, which takes a few seconds.
On narrow screens, swipe or scroll the plate sideways.
Read the summary for proof. A working percentage code adds a negative line of 10-30% under the subtotal; a fixed-amount code adds a flat $5-$20 line once its $30-$75 minimum is met; a free-shipping code drops the shipping line to $0. The order total must be lower than before the code — that movement is the confirmation.
If nothing moved, the cart will usually name the reason: expired, minimum not met, items excluded, one code per order, or new customers only. Fix the cause if you can — add an item to reach a threshold, or remove a rival code — and run the same apply-and-read test again.
Remember the one-code limit while testing: most carts accept exactly one promo code per order, so a second code replaces the first. Test rivals one at a time, note each total, and keep the winner. The comparison method is laid out in Coupon Stacking and Limit Rules, and the best weeks to try are mapped in the Annual Online Sale Calendar.
